Research is one of the priorities of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) of the University of Cyprus (UCY). Advancing the state of the art in science and engineering is the stated goal of the department’s efforts. Departmental research promotes scientific study in many areas of civil and environmental engineering, such as mechanics, materials, structures, earthquakes, construction management, environmental pollution and water resources. The department has achieved some notable research distinctions within its first eight years and has managed to produce a significant number of scientific publications. The CEE Department also enjoyed considerable success in attracting research funding. Particularly, the faculty in the Department were awarded 42 research projects, totalling more than 14 million euros in total research budget bringing over 8 million euros directly to the CEE Department. Most of this funding came from external sources, including the Cyprus Research Promotion Foundation, UNESCO and the European Union, while a small part came from internal university funding assigned on a competitive basis. The CEE laboratory is equipped with all the necessary equipment for the proposed research, covering both mechanical, physiochemical and durability tests.
